I just happened to read about a new preservation effort concerning the tomb of Winfield Scott Hancock’s wife this evening in a St. Louis Post-Dispatch story. It seems that the W.S. Hancock Society of Norristown, PA wants has offered to help preserve Almira Hancock’s tomb, now in poor condition in St. Louis’ Bellefontaine Cemetery. I continue to be amazed by the local St. Louis connection to the Civil War, and I’ve lived within 35 miles of the city almost my entire life. Jefferson Barracks’ location has a lot to do with this particular story. It is where Hancock was posted after his Mexican War service, and it is also how he came into contact with his future wife.

Could not help but wonder why Almira, who survived her husband, was not buried with him. Do you have any information on that front?
