June 5, 1864
The skirmish and engagement near Piedmont, VA, about 7 miles southwest of Port Republic, results in a Confederate defeat for the Confederate Dept. of Southwest Virginia, under Brig. Gen. W.E. Jones, CSA, by Maj. Gen. David Hunter, USA. An important loss for the Confederates, as the Federals begin taking control of the all important Shenandoah Valley, VA, the breadbasket of the Confederacy.
Brig. Gen. William Edmondson "Grumble" Jones, CSA, is mortally wounded at the skirmish near Piedmont, VA, instantly killed while directing his men on the front lines.
