How Much to Own Gettysburg? $750,000

I saw a news entry over at The Wargamer that I thought was definitely worth sharing. Apparently some Canadian Civil War enthusiasts decided to model the Battle of Gettysburg in 1:72 scale. It took three guys five years, but they did it.

What’s more, they’ve put the entire set up for sale on eBay with a starting price of $750,000. It’s times like these that I wish I had taken the Mark Cuban route in life. But come to think of it, $750,000 is just the tip of the iceberg. You’d have to buy some land and build a massive hangar just to store this bad boy.

Zero bids up to now. Not a big surprise. Most people play ACW in a different scale.

There was a reason for 6mm scale figures, what was it again? Oh yes, the fact that you can play Gettysburg on a large dinner table with just $ 1000 worth of figures that you can paint in a month.

    Edwin,

That’s the thing. They don’t want to actually play with it. Why build something as cool as that only to have it end up in a museum somewhere? IF these guys are lucky, a museum is about the only place or person I could see buying this thing…

Have you seen the pictures on the website? They are all out of focus, always a bad sign. IIRC some wargames club did Gettysburg in 25mm scale, with a lot less room and a lot more better and better painted figures. I strongly recommend 6mm if you want to get started with ACW wargaming, it’s cheap and the miniatures by Baccus look great. They have a US importer.

    Edwin,

I agree that the pictures of the diorama are terrible. They aren’t going to sell it that way! If people decide to go into 6mm scale, what rules sets support that size for figures?

There are good rules’systems around like JR3, F&F, and even Warhammer.

In a few weeks I hope to have my two 6mm armies complete, so I can give you more details.
