Ball's Bluff was a small-sized battle with outsized public opinion and consequences. Col. Edward Baker was disastrously (and fatally for himself) routed off of Ball's Bluff on the Potomac River near Leesville, Virginia on October 21, 1861. Troops from Gen. Nathan "Shanks" Evans' Brigade drove Baker's Yankee Regiments into the Potomac and massacred his men as they attempted to swim to the opposite shore. It was a resounding success for the Confederates, and a humiliating defeat for the Union.
