I have to apologize. It took me until the age of 26 (in 2005) to watch this masterpiece. John Carpenter delivers on the paranoia in this brutal and uncompromising movie. In The Thing, a group of Norwegians has discovered a wrecked spaceship in the Antarctic ice. Unfortunately for a team of Americans around 1 hour away by air, the last Norwegian is a piss-poor shot. You'll see what I mean by that comment later. Kurt Russell stars as a helicopter pilot among the team of Americans living in Camp 31. They are holed up for the winter and are enduring the tedium of living at the end of the world when the Norwegian man comes flying in on a helicopter attempting to shoot a dog. He hits one of the Americans instead, the dog runs away, and the Americans, not understanding, blow the Norwegian away. Soon after shit hits the fan, along with a TON of blood and guts. This movie is a remake of The Thing From Another World (1951), directed by Howard Hawks. After seeing this, I'll be sure to go out and get the original as well. I recommend this to anyone even remotely interested in the horror genre. After watching it only once, I'd have to say it is one of the top 10 horror films of the past 30 years. This gets a well-deserved 10/10. Buy it. You won't be sorry.
