The Machinist struck me (and I'm sure lots of others) most because of the incredibly gaunt appearance of Christian Bale. Apparently he lost over 60 pounds from his usual 185 pounds, and he looked like a walking, talking skeleton. Bale plays Trevor Reznik, a machinist who claims not to have slept in over a year. He is also receiving strange notes on his refrigerator door from someone when he is out working during the day. Reznik is befriended by a hooker (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh) and a waitress at an airport cafe (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón). Reznik doesn't know what is happening to him, and he is constantly searching for answers throughout the movie. He especially wants to talk to Ivan, an obnoxious co-worker who causes him to lose focus and thus cause an accident in which another co-worker loses his arm. The problem is, nobody seems to know who Ivan is. I liked the ending but was not overly impressed. Still, Brad Anderson, who also directed the excellent Session 9, knows how to create an oppressive, creepy atmosphere, and it is present throughout the movie. The Machinist is an excellent film, and I give it an 8/10 with a recommendation to buy.
