The original Invasion of the Body Snatchers from 1956 is one of my favorite movies, and is included in my personal top 20 of all time. With that said, this remake does a very, very solid job of recreating the intense feelings of paranoia and loneliness engendered in the original. Kevin McCarthey, who starred in the original as Dr. Bennell, makes a cameo in this movie screaming the same famous line. This time, he's not so lucky. ;-) I've always liked Donald Sutrherland, so it was easy to root for him as the new protagonist Matthew Bennell, a Deputy Health Inspector for the city of San Francisco. As in the first movie, people are changing. Not so much on the outside as on the inside, but they are changing nonetheless. Elizabeth Driscoll (Brooke Adams) notices her Dentist boyfriend has "changed", but she can't put her foot on it. Soon she is telling her friend and co-worker (though it is obvious early on that these two have a thing for each other) Matthew Bennell about these changes, and he doesn't believe her. Soon, however, he realizes all too well that she is telling the truth. I'l stop there as these movies are best left to viewing without knowing too much going in. I do need to mention the "Mog" (and Spaceballs fans will know what I'm talking about here). That scene was quite unexpected and I laughed my ass off. All in all, I'd say this is a solid buy. Not many remakes do justice to the original, but in this case, the remake does a solid job, and with the added pressure of having to remake a classic.
