Albert Castel

Decision In The West: The Atlanta Campaign of 1864

Comments:

There are some good points to this book and some not-so-good points. The book is written in present tense, so instead of reading "Sherman sent McPherson south to try to cut the Rebel supply line" you get "Sherman sends McPherson south to try to cut the Rebel supply line". It gets really annoying at times. Also, this is definitely not a definitive study of the campaign. Something this big really needs a multi-volume work to do it justice. Now that you've sat through the negatives, there are also positives. Mr. Castel's book is very interesting and is a great way to get introduced to the campaign. Although I did say his present tense stuff gets annyoing sometimes, I found that I had grown pretty used to it by the end of the book. All in all, this is the best book on the Campaign out there today. I'm just hoping something better comes along and soon!
