Bristoe Station & Mine Run

Eastern ACW Books

Contrary to popular belief, the war in the east in 1863 doesn't end with Lee's retreat from Gettysburg. In fact, later that year Lee launched an abortive strategic offensive similar to the one that started his 1862 Second Manassas Campaign. Unfortunately for Lee, A.P. Hill received a bloody nose from Warren's II Corps at Bristoe Station. After Lee again pulled back behind the Rappahannock, MEade was content to settle into winter quarters, but Lincoln ordered him forward. The result was the Mine Run Campaign of late November 1863. Meade and Lee squared off several miles west of the future Wilderness battlefield, but Meade withdrew after several days of close contact and skirmishing.
