Today In The Petersburg Campaign

July 6, 1864

The Confederate capture of Hagerstown, MD, by  Lieut. Gen. Jubal Early, CSA, as Cavalry Brig. Gen. John McCausland, CSA, levies $20,000 on the residents of Hagerstown in retribution for the destruction dealt the Shenandoah Valley by Maj. Gen. David Hunter, USA.
