Today in the Petersburg Campaign

January 7, 1864

Urged on by Lieut. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA, President Abraham Lincoln removes Maj. Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, USA, from active service in the US Army, after his last failure on the assault on Fort Fisher, Wilmington, NC; one of many in his career.  This effectively removes yet another Civil War figure from any future part in the war.
